Living Soul

Living Soul is a mock exhibit inspired by the work of installation artist Chiharu Shiota. Known for her awe-inspiring installations of red yarn intertwined with everyday objects, Shiota uses red yarn as a symbol of blood vessels and life, connecting objects to trace the path of her life journey.

The Living Soul exhibit reinterprets her iconic concepts and visuals, showcasing a new visual design with a mock exhibit hall, catalog, promotional materials, and merchandise.

Living Soul: A journey of Chiharu Shiota’s trace of existence

This mock exhibition presents some of Chiharu Shiota's most remarkable works through large monitors, documentary clips, and interactive installations. The exhibit hall is decorated with her signature red string, creating an immersive environment that invites visitors to explore Shiota's artistic journey and the story of her "living soul." Through this engaging setup, guests can connect with the themes of memory, connection, and life that define Shiota’s unique vision.

Design Process

The entire identity revolves around Chiharu Shiota's three signature elements: red, white, and strings, showing an elegant and modern aesthetic. The original typography features a ribbon-like stroke, with lines connecting each word and thin white lines overlaying the design. To enhance the main visual, I decided to hand-wove a yarn red cover for the catalog, capturing the essence of her artistic vision.
